After seven years on death row for alleged “blasphemy,” Shafqat Emmanuel and his wife Shagufta Masih were finally released from prison. The couple was accused of blasphemy, convicted, and sentenced to capital punishment in April 2014. Their allegedly ‘blasphemous’ text messages about the Muslim prophet Muhammad and the Quran are important because of the continued persecution that many religious minorities face in Muslim-majority nations.
