Truck driver Ed Durr defeated Steve Sweeney in the New Jersey State Senate Presidential race. The results shocked many. Durr never held an elected office before the race. Durr estimated he spent less than $10,000 on the campaign. In contrast, the New Jersey Education Association spent about $5.4 million to unseat Sweeney in 2017. Sweeney led the state’s upper legislative chamber for 12 years and was considered a man with significant power.
