Gov. Ron DeSantis asked the state Legislature for $3.5 million to revive the Florida State Defense Force. He proposes to train 200 volunteers who could quickly respond during emergencies such as hurricanes. Democrat critic, Nikki Fried, said that Florida does not need a paramilitary force under DeSantis’ authority. His press secretary defended the Governor’s request by providing a list of other states that maintain defense forces.
