Iran authorized retribution against 51 Americans for the 2020 killing of Islamic commander Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan pointed out that the permission to pay back comes as Iran-backed militias continue to attack American troops in the Middle East. Iranian officials also warn of terrorist attacks in the U.S. and around the world. Sullivan stated, “should Iran attack any of our nationals, including any of the 52 people named yesterday, it will face severe consequences.”
