Former Mecklenburg County Sheriff and Gun Shop Owner Advocate for National Mental Health Database

Objectivity 4.5 | Credibility 4.5 | Relevance 4.8

North Carolina’s Mecklenburg County gun permitting process does not currently account for criminal history, and it lacks comprehensive mental health screening.  Jim Pendergraph, former Mecklenburg County Sheriff, and Larry Hyatt, Charlotte gun shop owner, propose creating a national mental health database to be used for countrywide gun permitting.  Pendergraph said, “…It’s not that we’re against the Second Amendment. We love the Second Amendment as you can see behind us here, but I think there are certain people who have no business with a firearm.”
