Google Places Engineer on Leave After He Claims His AI Achieved Sentience

Objectivity 4.1 | Credibility 4.8 | Relevance 4.4

On June 11, Google engineer Blake Lemoine published a transcript of a conversation he had with an AI called Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA) — which revealed an incredible knowledge of emotion ethics as they related to its own existence. Google placed Lemoine on paid administrative leave. “I feel that the public has a right to know just how irresponsible this corporation is being with one of the most powerful information access tools ever invented,” Lemoine wrote. “Hundreds of researchers and engineers have conversed with LaMDA and we are not aware of anyone else making the wide-ranging assertions, or anthropomorphizing LaMDA, the way Blake has,” Google spokesman Brian Gabriel told The Washington Post.
