Leftist Gustavo Petro Becomes Colombia’s President

Former guerilla Gustavo Petro is set to be Colombia’s first leftist president after Sunday’s presidential elections.  Petro promised economic reforms during his campaign, including higher taxes, more government spending, and changes to the country’s pension system.  Petro won with 50.47% of the votes against Hernandez’s 47.25%, according to preliminary results released by election authorities Sunday evening.
