Germany Considers Extending Nuclear Plant Operations Amidst Looming Gas Crisis

Objectivity 3.8 | Credibility 4.6 | Relevance 4.8

Germany’s economy ministry said on Monday they may extend the life of three remaining nuclear power plants as public support grows in the face of a possible cut-off of Russian gas.  Former Chancellor Angela Merkel vowed to phase out nuclear power resulting in a scheduled year-end shut-down of the remaining German plants.  The environment and economy ministries’ March assessment did not recommend the extension, but waning gas supplies from Russia through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline have roused pro-nuclear voices in Germany and Europe expecting an electricity crunch this winter.
