Looming Railroad Strike Could Derail U.S. Economy

More than 100,000 railroad workers are considering striking over pay, health care and other issues.  Negotiators have made some progress with agreements reached on 8 of 13 points needed to avoid a strike.  However, working conditions for conductors and engineers remains a large unresolved issue.  U.S. Chamber of Commerce head Suzanne Clark said that a strike would be an “economic disaster.”  Bloomberg has reported that 28% of all U.S. freight is carried by trains.
