A recording of Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez making racist remarks referring to Councilman Mike Bonin was leaked just a few weeks before the midterm elections. Martinez said the white councilmember handled his young, black son just as if he were an “accessory” and described Bonin’s son as “Parece changuito,” or “looks like a monkey.” Bonin and his husband said, “No child should ever be subjected to such racist, mean and dehumanizing comments, especially from a public official.”
