Religious Freedom Threatened as Senate Passes Same-Sex Marriage Bill With Support of 12 Republicans

Objectivity 4.6 | Credibility 4.8 | Relevance 4.8

On Wednesday the Senate passed bill H.R. 8404 known as the “Respect of Marriage” Act in a cloture vote of 62-37, 12 of which were Republican votes.  The bill would legalize same-sex marriage nationwide forcing all 50 states to recognize any marriage legally allowed in any other state.  The impact of this bill also reaches the bounds of trampling religious freedom as it allows anyone who feels discriminated to sue an individual or business who refuses to provide goods and services for or participate in same-sex ceremonies, even when it is a faith-based objection.  Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said, “The U.S. Senate is making a mockery of marriage as it tramples on a foundational right — religious freedom of the individual.”
