The U.S. Department of Energy Sunday said that Jennifer Granholm, Secretary of Energy, would “announce a major scientific breakthrough” on Tuesday. The Sunday announcement came after the Financial Times reported Sunday that scientists in the California-based Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) had recently accomplished a significant breakthrough in nuclear fusion research. This would be the first time that scientists have succeeded in producing more energy in a fusion reaction, which is the same type that powers the Sun. This could be a major step in obtaining zero-carbon nuclear energy.
