The Iranian government has withdrawn from negotiations with Saudi Arabia geared towards normalizing relations between the two countries.  Tehran claims that Riyadh is secretly helping to fund the ongoing nationwide protests in Iran which started after Mahsa Amini died while in custody after being arrested by Iranian morality police for allegedly violating the dress code for women. The talks began in April 2021 with Iraq acting as a mediator but broke down in November.  Iranian rights groups say that 495 people have been killed since the start of the protests and over 18,000 have been arrested.
