Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said that he will be meeting with President Biden to discuss the current debt ceiling issue and ways to cut government spending later this week. McCarthy said, “I want to find a reasonable and a responsible way that we can lift the debt ceiling, but take control of this runaway spending.” While McCarthy intends to examine spending by every government agency, he said that cuts to Medicare and Social Security are “off the table.” The Treasury Department estimates that the U.S. can pay its obligations until June without raising the current debt ceiling.
