Twitter Removes Policy Restricting ‘Deadnaming’ Transgender People

Objectivity 4.7| Credibility 4.7 | Relevance 4.8

Twitter has removed a policy forbidding the “targeted misgendering or deadnaming of transgender individuals.” The LGBTQIA+ community coined the term “deadnaming” for using a person’s given name after they have begun identifying as another gender and under a new name, usually of the opposite biological gender.  In 2018, Twitter had enacted the policy against deadnaming, as well as intentionally using the incorrect gender for someone as a form of harassment.  On Monday, Twitter said now it will only put warning labels on some tweets that are “potentially” in violation of its rules against hateful conduct. Previously, the tweets were removed.
